Denver City Lax is a new program to the Colorado lacrosse scene, but there is a good deal to report. A lot happened in the short period of time that makes up the quick spring lacrosse season, and we are continuing to make big plans for the future. The idea of an “inner city” lacrosse program has been a topic of discussion within the Denver lacrosse community for many years. This past season saw several individuals come together to organize the first City Lax team, but our organization’s success was also attributable to the entire Colorado lacrosse community that has grown to provide opportunities for youth programs at every stage of development and at every level of experience.

Just as the sport of lacrosse continues to boom throughout the country, City Lax grew at a quick pace in 2007. A team of about twenty 5th graders played their first game in March and ten weeks later took home a trophy at the annual Warrior Rocky Mountain Jamboree. With rapid growth comes the challenge for Colorado Lacrosse to stay true to the ideals of the game, and for City Lax to stay true to our aim of establishing an instructive sports program built on a foundation of character education.

City Lax is based on several beliefs. First, that the sport of lacrosse can provide both on the field and classroom lessons. The educational opportunities associated with lacrosse — from elementary school through college — are numerous. Second, a sports program can provide the framework to teach and learn character – to learn about basic human values including honesty, kindness, generosity, courage, equality and respect. And third, that providing opportunity and building character in our youth is essential and important to raising community leaders of today and tomorrow. This model is not new. Much of our organizations own education and inspiration regarding how to build and run such a program comes from US Lacrosse and their successful BRIDGE programs and from the Positive Coaching Alliance. Our thanks to these forerunners cannot be measured.

Successfully meeting our goals and challenges requires a dedicated staff, and a commitment from numerous volunteers. Thus far we have been overwhelmed by the willingness of people wanting to help and assist at various levels of involvement with our organization. We will continue to challenge ourselves, and hope our supporters in the community will continue to assist. Working together with our supporters and volunteers will make the continued growth and success of City Lax possible. A great deal of enthusiasm has been evident from everyone involved. We hope that passion continues to spell success and achievement for our organization.

See you on the fields,

Rod Allison
