City Lax ProgramsOur program intends to include both educational and athletic pursuits, modeled after successful US Lacrosse BRIDGE programs such as Metrolacrosse of Boston, WINNERS Lacrosse in Washington D.C., Lacrosse for Life in San Francisco and Native Lax in Colorado. We want to encourage volunteerism and leadership.
Called by some the greatest game on two feet, lacrosse is a sport that allows inner-city youth to demonstrate their ability to adapt to a new sport and in the process learn lessons linked to athletics such as teamwork, self esteem, effort and sportsmanship. We believe volunteering is beneficial to everyone involved including the community at large. Local high school and college students can provide help to our youth with athletics, homework, math, reading and writing skills while they develop their own talents through experiences with City Lax. Our participants can spend the day at work with members of the community, or a day shadowing high school and college students. The entire Colorado Lacrosse community welcomed our team with open arms into the family of lacrosse. Native Lax became our close friends, teaching us about the history of the game, and forming new relationships. The Outlaws and CSU treated us to a private clinic on John Elway’s field at Invesco. Twelve of our kids were given scholarships to the girl’s camp at Kent Denver and the boy’s camp run by Go Fast. Harrow and Laxworld assisted with discounted equipment and uniforms. And in Vail, the Shootout’s original founders conveyed the “family message” to our team by word and deed, offering instruction, admission and gear. With that background and foundation, Denver City Lax’s participants have been instilled with the concept that the game of lacrosse is about “giving back.” An essential part of our program will be for our participants to carry that same message to other community members by providing clinics and demonstrations at other Denver Public Schools, and continue to grow and mentor the development of new City Lax teams and other youth teams. We are developing projects Denver City Lax can perform for others. |
